About

Hi Folks!

I’m Josh, a fellow crypto-currency coin mining enthusiast. As a custom computer systems builder, I set up small business computers and networks for local businesses through my IT consultancy. With my background in technology, I had the good fortune of discovering Bitcoin, Ethereum and other cryptocurrencies. After researching on hundreds of forum posts and other related resources online, I have made a fair amount of profits ‘mining’ these currencies with custom-built mining hardware.

Thanks for stopping by! Here’s to your mining success!

– Josh

Great site! I was wondering if you could run the 6 GPU build with 6 r9 290’s with the 1600W power supply. I’ve searched for an answer but there seems to be a lot of confusion in different forums. Thanks in advance, I send people to your site on a daily basis. You’re helping a lot of people out!

The R9 290 when properly undervolted runs at about 250 watts. You’d be pushing it to put six on that 1600 watt power supply. I would recommend either limiting your build to five R9 290s or running it on two 1,000 watt PSU’s connected together. Browse over to the budget build guide (link on the right sidebar) to see how this would work.

Hi Josh, I’ve been a few weeks since reading your blog and I liked it, and I can understand! (I speak Spanish) and everything is fine (very rich in images, a text in English really clear, I love it).

The point is: Currently I don´t have a lot to invest in mining and would like you to give me some tips to start with what I have (from an old pc) and with little money to invest.

    What I have:

    – Motherboard: ASUS MAXIMUS FORMULA / SE, Intel Core 2 Extreme / Core 2 Duo Ready, Intel X38/ICH9R, Dual-Ch DDR2 1200/1066 MHz Support, Dual PCIE x16, CrossFire Ready

    – Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Quad-Core Processor, 2.40 GHz, 8M L2 Cache, LGA 775

    – RAM Memory: Corsair XMS2 2GB (2 X 1 GB DDR2 800Mhz 240-pin Dual Channel Memory Kit and Corsair XMS2 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 800 MHz (PC2 6400) Desktop Memory (TWIN2X4096-6400C5)

    – Diamond Viper ATI Radeon HD 3850 PCIE 256MB GDDR3 Video Card

    – L01F500 Maxtor SATA II 500 GB Internal Hard Drive

    – Thermaltake Toughpower W0103 600-Watt Power Supply for ATX 12V 2.2 and EPS 12V

    I could buy:

    – 2 Gigabyte AMD Radeon HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 DVI-I/HDMI/2x Mini-Displayport PCI-Express Graphic Card GV-R795WF3-3GD —- 297, $ 8 x 2

    -1 LEPA G Series 1600-Watts ATX12V/EPS12V SLI Crossfire Ready 80 Plus Gold Certified 240-Pin Full Modular Power Supply 1700 (G1600-MA) —- $ 280.49

    – Two PCIe 1x to 16x Riser Extender Powered Flexible Cable with Molex —– 10, 22 x 2

    – 1 Holmes HBF2010A-WM 20 Inch Box Fan —– 30, $ 57

    My budget is $ 900

This confguration may be advisable to begin with? (I am slowly increasing to achieve your cunfiguracion of “How to Build a 6 GPU Bitcoin Mining Rig”)

How much I can earn monthly with this configuration?

Really thank you very much in advance. Take care of yourself.

Hi Josh, thanks for your response, I bought two 7950 cards, but I had a problem with the Lepa 1600, it stopped working. Right now I’m sending for warranty (imagine, from Venezuela to Los Angeles. I’m Crying), a friend told me it might be that do not connect the riser molex cable to the motherboard, which you know that? and where should connect the molex cable? Thank you again.

Hey Josh, this guide is AMAZING! Just wanted to say thank you so much for your work. I am new to the whole mining thing and would like to know, is this still profitable in your opinion? Also, I see the guide hasn’t been updated in a few months, is there anything you would recommend changing if say I were to want to build a $2000 machine? Would you recommend trying to buy parts separately on ebay or another vendor for lower cost instead of paying retail prices? I noticed you haven’t left an e-mail address and I’m sure you don’t want tons of people flooding it, but is there a way to chat with you more in depth about this? I would really like to build a machine in the next few weeks and just want to get the best possible advice from you as of right now, thanks so much!

Hi Patrick! I’ve been working on another project over the last few weeks, so haven’t spent much time on this site. Mining Litecoin or WorldCoin is still profitable, especially if you mine and hold for a year (value goes up significantly year over year for winning cryptocurrencies). Bitcoin mining is no longer profitable on GPU rigs, at the current difficulty and is unlikely to be profitable again due to the ASICs now shipping.

    Hi Josh.
It’s me again lol… so I went out and bought everything you mentioned, but I’m having trouble connecting my monitor to the computer. When I plug a single GPU into my motherboard and connect my monitor to that I am able to see the “loading windows” screen, but when I plug all four GPUs into my motherboard my monitor is blank regardless of which GPU I connect it to. Should I be installing windows with only a single GPU plugged in and then add the rest later, or is there a specific GPU I should be plugging my monitor into.

    Thanks.
    Ben

Hi Josh, love the site and recommendations. I have followed most of what you suggested.

Question though… what gpu temperatures are your 7950s running in your quad rig? I’m running three 7970s and they are currently 67, 92, 82 degrees celcius…. so at 2:15am I’m running out to Walmart to look at fans. lol. The temperatures are making me nervous, especially with the gpu fans running 100% and the temperatures still being that high.

The 7950’s in my rig run at around 75 C with ambient temperatures around 25 C. Temps at 92 are insane and would worry me a lot! I use a box fan from Walmart. Also, I have heard that some cards have poorly applied thermal paste on the radiators, though I haven’t experienced this and don’t know of any Sapphire cards having this issue.

    Thanks for that Josh!

Do you know of any rigs out now that use the ASIC design like Butterfly Labs/ Avalon ?
I might as well get a new design if that’s where LTC is going also.

    Thanks for your time

Hi Josh, Fistly Thanks for this awesome site you have here!
I’m new to all of this and would like to know if you could build a rig for me and add a premium for your cost?
Let me know if you are interested and your cost for the service.

    Thanks

    Hi Josh,
Many thanks for putting that info up. I’d like to build a rig that is proven like yours but the MSI motherboard is out of stock everywhere(?) Any suggestions or substitutes?

      Hi Billibob,

Thanks for the heads up! Popular motherboards often go out of stock, online. I’ve updated the guide with an equivalent motherboard for litecoin mining. Here’s the direct link.

With $4,000, I’d probably build 2x 7950 powered miners. That would be 8 GPU’s and almost 5,000 KH/s of mining power. As a matter of fact, that’s about what I have invested in litecoin mining rigs right now, give or take a few dollars.

I just checked out your website. Cool looking cases! I especially like the drum setup. I can see why some more aesthetically minded folks might want something like that. I prefer a quick and dirty setup that doesn’t cost much. 🙂

    Hi Josh,
I just wanted to let you know that for those miners who might not be interested in the milk crate “case”, there are now cases designed specifically for mining rigs. 😉

Thanks Rich. Can they compete with the price of a milk crate though? Many people who setup a mining rig want the most hashing power they can get at the lowest price, which means a milk crate mining rig is the best case for a mining rig, one step up from cardboard or wood. 🙂

    Hi Josh.
Thanks for the informative website – I will definitely be shipping you a couple Litecoins once I’m up and running as a small thank-you 🙂 Just a quick question… can the Seasonic X-1250 80PLUS Gold Certified Power Supply Unit handle 4 of the new Sapphire Radeon HD 7990 GPUs? If not, what power supply should I get! Thanks, Ben.

Hi Ben, to be honest, I’d avoid the 7990s at the moment. Running 4 would require a costly 2000 watt PSU or 2x 1000 watt PSU. They are essentially 2x 7970 cores on one card, so the power usage and heat produced by them is off the charts. What would be awesome would be if AMD had developed a card that was the equivalent of 2x 7950s. That would be the holy grail of litecoin mining gpu’s. 🙂

Great blog. I actually built a system looking at your post. I have a question. I am new to mining and i am researching as much as i can when i have time. Maybe you can help me out a bit. What is the main difference in hardware need to mine bitcoin and litecoin? Bitcoin uses mostly GPU power and very little to no CPU power. Would you recommend any hardware changes for the litecoin miner? Let me know. Thanks.

Thanks for your words of encouragement! I’ve been blown away by the positive responses to my little website. Even had a couple of coin donations come in anonymously. Regarding your question about differences in mining Bitcoin vs Litecoin, I found that Litecoin mining takes more system memory. I would recommend you have a minimum of 8GB for 4 cards, whereas bitcoin mining doesn’t affect RAM usage that much. Also, CPU power is pretty much useless for either bitcoin or litecoin mining at this point. Of all the alt-currencies, Litecoin is by far the best one to mine, in my opinion. Best of luck in your mining endeavors! – Josh
